Thanks for writing this, this is all so important to say. Also, here’s the event that changed “Downtown” for me: https://www.tennessean.com/in-depth/news/local/2021/01/10/timeline-christmas-morning-bombing-nashville/6578915002/

Yes! I forgot all about that. I remember thinking when that happened: this beautiful song is on the scene of a tragedy once again -- but this time for everybody.

This is just so eloquently written and so tragic. My cousin Jim and I wrote our own Top Tens in notebooks weekly in the 60s, and “Downtown” topped my charts for weeks. We actually went downtown Warren every week to Vogue Records to get WHOT’s list of top 45s.

That's awesome. I'd love to see those notebooks! I think that early to mid-1960s period was so stylish and fun. I think I've said this to you before, but if I could pick a time and place to be alive, I'd pick New York City from Mrs. Maisel Season 1 (1958, I think?), through 1980. Get my uptown/ downtown Beat poets and Kingston trio on, then Warhol and the Velvet Underground right no through to Martin Scorsese and CBGB.

I'd even go along with you to Studio 54 (if not without wry commentary).
